Clinton Backs India Nuclear Pact

Former US president Bill Clinton has said future American governments will honour the Washington's nuclear deal with India. His comments on Thursday in New Delhicame amid speculation over the fate of the deal after President George Bush leaves office. 'In general, when new governments come in, they tend to honour the commitments of the previous administrations,' Clinton said. Battling for the deal, the former Democrat President said the deal was important to help India cut down on greenhouse gas emissions and generate clean energy. 'First of all, I think the cooperation is good. If India wants to produce nuclear energy for purpose of electrical power it is, from greenhouse gas point of view, a good deal so far as you know what to do with the nuclear waste,' Clinton said addressing the India Today Conclave. On why his administration did not offer India a similar deal, Clinton said he was more focussed on nuclear non-proliferation issue and did not want China to start producing nuclear weapons. 'I did not want to give the Chinese an excuse to build nuclear weapons,' the former President said.
